He was born in 1905, a native of
Taishan, Guangdong Province. His father was an overseas Chinese in Philippines. In the twenties he studied arts in the Philippine University. He went through hardship for being poor and spent as long as six to seven years to finish the art courses. Being faithful all his life to his art ideal , he persevered in his interest and doted on painting tirelessly. What he contributed is the oil paintings with Chinese characteristics and national intension. He was also proud of this feature.
He returned to Hong Kong in 1936 and began to embark on his career in painting. He taught painting in 1946 at Hong Kong Anglo-Chinese School. In a sea voyage from Zhongshan Prefecture, Guangdong to Hong Kong, the ship sank in an accident and drowned all his works made in his early period. Now the only painting left for his early period was one produced in 1938-
"Mooncake". He held his solo show "A Recollection of Wu Bubun' s Works" at Hong Kong Hall in 1994, with over 100 works on display.
His oil paintings are rich in varieties. The portrait paintings can master romantic charms, his works on still objects are penetrative with expression. He often travels across the country to observe nature and landscape. When he paints from life, he must be personally on the scene to draw the theme, and let the spectator find himself in it. In the application of paints, he stresses the understanding of
colours. For colour matching, the mixing of various colors should not reduce their brilliancy. They should be appropriate in gaudiness on canvas. Relying on his strength of will, interest and toughness, Wu Buyun produced art works sparkling with life and ranked among the leading painters of China.
