Born in 1931 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, he graduated
from the Painting Department of Zhejiang Institute of Fine Arts. Now he is
professor of the said institute, member of Chinese Artists’ Association
and member of Zhejiang Oil Painting Research Society.
His
abecedarian was Su Tianci, a famous painter at that time. He was called
the man who was heretical and deviate from the true teachings under the
orthodox education after founding of the Republic. He was deeply
influenced by the well-known painters such as Lin Fengmian, Su Tianci,
Guan Liang and Hu Shanyu, without seeking the painting model of the Soviet
Union. Because he could not offered to draw oil painting in his youth, he
paint a great number of watercolors, from which he enjoyed great benefits.
For this reason, in his later creation of oil painting, he always
maintained the characteristics of watercolour painting in summarization
and flowability. In addition, he was in love with freehand brushwork in
traditional Chinese painting, especially adoring the paintings of Huang
Binhong. Afterwards he also intensively studied Chinese calligraphy. This
laid the foundation for forming his today style full of colour of
expressionism in creation of oil painting.
He all along delicates himself to creation of the oil painting of
free sketch and seeks the aesthetic taste in brushwork, which is easier to
be neglected by Western painters. His oil paintings are experienced in
brushwork, and intense in colouring. The image is no longer the aim of his
painting. His representative works include “Painter―Pan Tianshou”, “Evening
Glow”, “Da Yu Mausoleum” and “Going Sight-seeing on Ali
Mountain”, etc. His book “The Techniques on Sketch” and his solo
picture album have been published. |
