Born in 1934 in Henan Province, he graduated from the Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1953 and was kept in school as a graduate for advanced studies. He studied at the training class of oil painting directed by the expert from the Soviet Union and retained to work as a teacher at the said academy after graduation in 1957. At present he is president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and standing councilor of Chinese Artists¡¦ Association.

He created the historical oil paintings ¡§Seeing People Off¡¨ and ¡§The Meeting of December¡¨ respectively in 1959 and 1961 for the Chinese Revolutionary Museum. Many of his works of painting took part in various exhibitions such as Beijing Oil Painting Works Exhibition (1962), the Third National Art Works Exhibition (1964), and Commemoration Exhibition of All-China Art Works (1977). In addition, in 1979 he went to the West Germany on a tour of investigation with China art education inspection group. In 1980 his work of painting was on display at Beijing Oil Painting Exhibition and was awarded a prize. In 1982 he went to USA to visit and investigate the American arts and gave lectures at the Art Department of New York Municipal University. In 1984 his oil painting ¡§Qu Qiubai¡¨ was shown in the Sixth National Art Works Exhibition and received a silver medal. In 1985 his paintings took part in the Second Asia Art Works Exhibition held in Japan, and at the same time he attended the symposium relating to arts. In 1986 his painting took part in the Contemporary Oil Painting Works Exhibition of China. In 1987 his works were exhibited at China Modern Oil Painting Works Exhibition held in Japan, and in the same year the works took part in China First Oil Painting Exhibition. He is the present portrait painter with highest status in China, as well as an art master enjoying a great reputation worldwidely. During 1987~1996, his works of oil painting took part in countless important exhibitions both at home and abroad, in which his three works such as ¡§Pasturage in Summer¡¨, ¡§Praying¡¨ and ¡§Taking Breath¡¨ were shown at China Oil Painting Exhibition of 1995 Asia Arts Fair held in Hong Kong.
