Born into a well-known artist family in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, he began to learn painting at age 8 and studied in Japan in his early youth. He was a famous oil painter and art educator in China. In 1922 he learned Western painting at the studio of the Commercial Press, Ltd. Next year he made pigment for oil painting by himself and copied printer’ ink of oil painting. In January 1919, he sponsored, with Yang Zuotao, the Suzhou Art Painting Society and collected the works of Chinese and Western painters throughout the country for display. The activity of painting-collection went on for 20 years from beginning to end. He founded the Suzhou Fine Arts School in 1922, which was one of the earliest art schools in China. For over 70 years he had been devoted to art education and had pupils everywhere. Many of them are accomplished artists. In 1927 he went to study in France and studied painting at the E.Rolongs ?Studio of Higher Art School in Paris. During the time, he went to the Louvre Museum to copy pictures in the afternoon every day. In the period of study in France, he also went to Belgium where he produced numerous paintings of landscape. He was one of the pioneers in China to study oil painting in Europe. After his return to China in 1931, he continued his post as the principal of Suzhou Fine Arts School. He concurrently acted as director of the Art Department of Central University in Nanjing in 1933. Since 1949 he had held the posts such as vice-president of East China Branch of Central Academy of Fine Arts, vice –president and professor of Zhejiang Institute of Fine Arts,councillor of Chinese Artists’ Association, vice-chairman of Shanghai Branch of Chinese Artists’ Association, and adviser to Zhejiang Institute of Fine Arts. He was the first Chinese painter who won international painting prize. On his way back from Europe, he brought back to China, through untold hardships, 500 pieces of plaster replicas made from European famous sculptures and a large number of teaching materials of art education, which had high art educational value and exerted profound influence to the later teaching in Chinese art schools. He wrote the books “Perspective for Arts” and “On Colouring” during his lifetime, and besides his picture albums were published including “Selected Works of Yan Wenliang’s Painting”, “A Collection of Oil Paintings”, “Sketches on a Tour to Europe” and “Landscape Paintings of Suzhou”, etc. During his study in France, many of his works were considered to have reached the standard of great masters of contemporary European impressionist school. During the 60 years after his return, never had he stopped his work on oil painting. His works ingeniously and successfully combined the rich colouring change of European impressionist school with Chinese traditional art. He stood out as a model of Chinese oil painters with realistic style, exquisite, simple and unsophisticated. His early works emphasized on perspective and composition. In his middle years, he made deep study in the change of light and shade in colours. In his late years, he preferred gorgeous colouring and was good at handling light effect. He made use of colouring contrast and the change in colour gradations to show the beauty of nature, having rich interest, fresh seatiment and generous realm. With unusual art boldness, in his nineties, he still engaged in difficult creative themes. This showed he had the guts for innovation and was faithful to the cause of art. In the art circles of China he was of noble character and enjoyed high prestige. He dedicated nearly 90 years to painting and was known both in China and abroad. The works he left behind formed an important position in the treasure house of Chinese arts. | ||
