Later he went to study painting in France under Professor Simon, the great contemporary famous painter. He graduated from National Higher Art Institute in Paris in 1934 with excellent results. His works won honors in the French spring saloon.Upon his return from abroad in 1935, he began teaching in Guangzhou Art School and National Art Institute. After the victory against Japan, the National Art Institute moved back to Hangzhou, and he also settled down in Hangzhou. He had been professor in Hangzhou National Art Institute, East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Zhejiang Institute of Fine Arts, and adviser to Zhejiang Artists¡¦ Association. For half a century he devoted himself diligently and conscientiously to teaching, and had pupils everywhere. He devoted himself to painting in a lapse of over sixty years and scored a great success for his assiduous and industrious efforts. For years he studied with great concentration the tradition of painting art of Western Europe. At the same time he worked with care and effort to apply national aesthetic standard combined with oriental artistic skill to express colorful life. Vividness and simplicity with brilliant coloring and elegant conception featured his art language. His clear-cut individuality and distinctive style shown by his profound art attainments won wide acclaim both in China and abroad. He had all along observed the correct relationship between art and life of the times. He explored and depicted the beauty of life with genuine and sincere feeling, thus arousing sympathetic response from the people. He looked down on ostentatious and ornate style and preferred a plain, natural style like himself. No matter whether is it a still object, or a landscape or a portrait, the keynote of his works is ever optimistic and forward looking. When lingering on before his paintings, the spectators can feel relaxed, ardently love life the more and look forward to a better future. Despite his advancing years, he was tireless in pursuit of art. His solo show was held in Zhejiang, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Kunming, Guangdong. His ¡§Selected Oil Paintings of Hu Shanyu¡¨ was published, and his picture album ¡§Still Life¡¨ won award in a national art exhibition. In 1994, a joint exhibition with Lin Dachuan was held in Hong Kong under the auspices of the Oriental Arts Foundation. |
